Inquiry Statement ‘Design for a changing future’

Tumuaki/Principal Message

It’s been an eventful Term Two, with a focus on the concept ‘The Scientist in me’.

One of the highlights on our calendar was our ‘Matariki Night Market’ our school fundraiser where parents and the community came together to support our tamariki. Awesome performances and beautiful waiata from Te HIaora, Punialava’a aiga, our Samoan cultural group and Piiwaiwaka, as well as dancing and sold out stalls made the night a huge success.

Te Hiaroa opened and closed our evening with Karakia and waiata – a fitting way for us to go into Matariki.

We also celebrated Samoan Language Week (June 1st – 7th) focussing on the theme ‘Ia malu lou sā. Folau i lagimā’ ‘A well-grounded self is a successful self’, encouraging on what it means to be strong, balanced and prepared for life’s journey. We finished off the week with our farewell to  Whaea Maxx  who has led these celebrations over the past 9 years. It goes without saying she will be surely missed by many who came to say goodbye.

We celebrated International language week in Week 7 and this was an opportunity for students to proudly dress up in their traditional and cultural wear representing the country of their heritage and ethnicity.

We achieved a big first as part of our Digital Technology strategy, where we transtioned to online school reports using HERO an all-in-one robust Student Management System for schools. It allows for our teachers and families to view and share information anytime on any device bringing together all school releated information in one place.

Thank you parents/caregivers and whaanau for attending the Parent Partnership Meetings held over two nights to discuss your child’s learning progress and their goals. We appreciate any feedback you may have about our new student management system ‘HERO’.

We had our Scholastic Book Fair held in the last week of Term and Whaea Rose our school librarian created a wonderful set up in the auditorium attracting our tamariki to bring along their parents and families to support and purchase items where all funds will go towards learning resources for the library. It was a great success and we raised more than last year. Thank you for coming along to support.

We sadly farewell Whaea Cecily Taufelila who has taken on a new role as Learning Support Coordinator at Sir Douglas Bader Intermediate School. Whaea Cecily taught at MBS for up to two years as one of our Classroom Release teachers. We would like to thank Whaea Cecily for her hard work, teaching our tamariki and her contribution to MBS. We wish her all the best with her new career pathway.

Thank you for your patience as we complete refurbishments during the term in the Piiwaiwaka area. Some of our teachers have been teaching in different spaces this term and we would like to thank them for their patience. Thanks to Bo our Caretaker who has also set up signs around the school for health and safety which is paramount for our tamariki and adults.

Finally, we are looking forward to next term as we prepare to showcase The Arts Curriculum (dance, drama, music and visual art) through our very own School Production ‘Ko wai ahau?’. It is going to be very exciting to see our tamariki in action. There will be more details to come so watch this space!

We will be welcoming our new students and whaanau on the first day back in Term 3 with a Poowhiri and hope you can join us. A warm welcome to Whaea Alisa and Whaea Kathy who will be teaching at MBS part time next term. We hope you continue to enjoy the school holiday break and will see you back on Monday 14th July.

Ngaa mihi nui, Fa’afetai tele lava, Fakaaue lahi

Years 1 – 3

Ruma Tahi – Rm 1

It’s been a fantastic second half of Term 2 in Room 1!
We’ve enjoyed celebrating Samoan Language Week, having fun in PE with Coach KC, congratulating our superstar readers with principal stickers, and cheering for Matthew, who won best dressed in the International Languages Week parade! It’s been a fun and productive term, and we’re all looking forward to a well deserved break.

Ruma Rua – Rm 2

Room 2 developed their movement skills through engaging sessions with Coach Kevin, where they learned new techniques and abilities. As part of their inquiry, they explored the various ingredients used to make playdough. In the classroom, students used the playdough to explore and express their creativity in different ways.

Ruma Toru – Rm 3

Ruma Wha – Rm 4

In Term 2, Ruma Wha farewelled our Piiwaiwaka Team Leader Whaea Maxx. We will miss you Whaea Max! In week 7 our Kura celebrated the diversity in our school community with International Language Week. We had the opportunity to share Kai from different cultures of our class. We dressed in cultural clothes that celebrate the differences in our community. We farewell a popular member of Ruma Wha 2025 Hans Segismar. We will miss his contributions to our learning especially with flags of the world and Astronomy. All the best with your new school in Manurewa Hans, we know you will make lots of friends!

Ruma Rima – Rm 5

Our student inquiry this term was titled ‘The Scientist in Me’. We explored how our bodies work and how to take care of them. As part of our learning, we focused on what helps keep our bodies strong and healthy, which led us to explore the importance of healthy eating.

A key part of our inquiry was understanding and using the food pyramid to learn about different food groups and making balanced choices.

Ruma Ono – Rm 6

Ruma Whitu – Rm 7

Our Inquiry focus this term, “The Scientist in Me,” took us on a hands-on journey of discovery as we explored how to grow and care for our very own garden. The students showed curiosity, responsibility, and enthusiasm as they learned about the needs of plants, experimented with different growing conditions, and nurtured their green spaces with care. It has been a joy to watch their excitement as our garden flourished, and even more rewarding to see them take ownership of their learning in such a meaningful way. We’re already looking forward to the learning and adventures that Term 3 will bring. Wishing everyone a safe, restful, and well-deserved break! Team Rm 7

Ruma Waru – Rm 8

Room 8 and Whaea Alisa have been getting to know each other over the past 3 weeks and focusing on whakawhanaungatanga. Our writing and inquiry has been centered on the stars and symbols of Matariki.

Kea Whaanau

Years 4 – 6

Kea Whaanau’s Carbon Adventure at Ambury Farm

In Week 7, our Kea Whaanau went on an exciting trip to Ambury Farm Learning Centre to explore how the carbon cycle works and why soil is so important. We learnt that the FBI, fungi, bacteria, and invertebrates are like tiny superheroes that help break down things and return carbon to the soil to keep our planet healthy. We found out that soil is not just dirt – it has special textures, shapes, and different types, which we tested by checking pH levels and how much water each soil could hold at two different places. We also looked at the difference between soil earthworms and worm farm worms, and we learnt how both help keep soil healthy by breaking down waste and giving nutrients back to the earth. When we visited the foreshore, we stopped to watch, listen, and see what lives there now. We looked for tiny bugs, worms, and tracks to help us understand the carbon cycle even more. We had fun using Trakka tunnels and Jenga blocks to explore how carbon moves in nature. We also talked about how people can help or harm the carbon cycle and what we can do to help the Earth. A big thank you to Richard and his team for giving us such a fun and brilliant learning adventure!

Riding the Rapids: Year 6 Wero Adventure!

Our Year 6 students had an unforgettable time at the Wero Whitewater Rafting experience, where they came together to enjoy the thrill of outdoor education at its best. This adventure was not just about the excitement on the water, but also about learning the importance of teamwork, communication, and trust. Students developed key skills such as listening carefully, working together to steer the raft, and supporting each other through challenging moments. It was a wonderful opportunity for our tamariki to build strong relationships with students from other classes, creating new friendships and lasting memories. A big thank you to our amazing senior teachers’ team, led by Matua Peter, for making this experience possible and supporting our Year 6 students every step of the way. If you haven’t checked out our drone footage, you can view all the fun in action on our Mangere Bridge School Facebook page.

Ruma Tekau maa Tahi – Rm 11

Happy Holidays whānau! In Week 7, Room 11 had a unique opportunity to be one of the first two classes to experience The new Carbon Cycle Education program at Ambury Farm Learning Centre. We met Richard and Richard, the two amazing Rangers that took us through five different learning stations. We learnt about how Tiger Worms are able to eat their body weight in food every day! They live and feed close to the surface of the soil, and tend to stay in one area. These worms consume large amounts of organic material, which not only reduces waste but also produces nutrient-rich castings that can enhance soil health. We found out that soil is not just dirt – it has special textures, shapes, and different depths of moisture. We carried out a couple of experiments to check PH levels and learn how much water each soil could hold. When we visited the foreshore, and learnt how the landscape had changed over time. As tide fluctuation happens the wetlands have become good for vegetation. Many plants are now present on our coastline. We stopped to watch, listen, and see what lives there now.  We played a game using Jenga blocks which helped us learn more about how carbon moves through nature.. We talked about how people can help or harm the carbon cycle and what we can do to help our Earth. A big thank you to Ambury Farm whānau for inviting us to have this educational experience

Ruma Tekau maa Rua – Rm 12

Happy holidays whaanau! Thank you for your continued support this term. We appreciated the chance to connect with whaanau at the parent-teacher evening, where the children proudly shared their learning successes through whanaungatanga. One of the highlights this term was our trip to Ambury Farm, where the children engaged in the Down to Earth program, learning about different types of soil, the soil cycle, and engaging in hands-on experiments. For inquiry, we learnt about transportation by exploring different modes of travel, making creative models, writing poems, and completing online research projects. The children demonstrated great curiosity and enthusiasm as they investigated how transportation impacts our daily lives and communities. In class, we enjoyed exploring literacy with friends, developing our typing skills and using Google Slides to create projects for presentations to whaanau. Wishing whaanau a happy, safe, and restful holiday!

What a learning journey it has been in the last 5 weeks with Akomanga 13. Learning and getting familiarised with different systems, tikanga and kaupapa. This term has been a building step for “Ko Wai Au” for me and Room 13. I have been observing and making changes to my teaching approach to make a deliberate Inquiry-based, collaborative and culturally responsive way of learning.

In our akomanga, we have been celebrating the uniqueness of our neighbouring island of Samoa and the beauty of its culture and language. “Ia malu lou sā. Folau i lagimā – A well-grounded self, is a successful self”. Some of our akomanga 13 kotiro performed in the MBS Samoan Group, and they were stunning. Malo lava le taumafai.

We have also been connecting with our other cultures that are in Akomanga 13 to share and learn to foster “Ko Wai Au”, fostering cross-cultural partnerships. China, Croatia, Nigeria & India. We celebrated with a whole school parade and kai from other countries. Hvala.

Akomanga 13 were blessed to attend the Ambury Farm sustainability sessions. What an experience to learn in our own backyard. Learning about the carbon in our ecosystem and how it affects us in our environment. Great Learning during that day.

Our Year 6’s had the opportunity of a lifetime to go on the Wero Whitewater Rafting excursion in Manukau. What a great way to build confidence and resilience for the rest of the year.

Stay true to yourself, year 6’s and give 110% in everything that you do. Kia Kaha.

Sports in Akomanga 13 is on the rise. We have had nga tamariki participate in the Battle of the bridges, an individual MBS Sports teams – Rugby & Netball. We are proud of you and your efforts of success. Play Hard but Play Fair. Good Luck to all Room 13 Students that play on the Weekends.

Manawatia a Matariki me Puanga, we have been celebrating by making our first-class projects. It is still in learning and developing progress. Over time, it will become second nature. Thank you for supporting the Kea Whanau fundraiser at the Matariki Gala 2025.

Nga Mihi to all Akomanga 13 whaanau for your endless support towards your child’s learning in our class and at parent interviews. Looking forward to finishing the rest of the year and leading the way to success. Aroha, Ako, Angitu – Together we care, we learn, we succeed

Ruma Tekau maa Wha – Rm 14

Room 14 has enjoyed a very hands-on term this term. From making koko alaisa in Samoa Language Week, learning about amazing tiger worms at Ambury Farm, to finding different ways to solve multiplication problems; the learning and fun hasn’t stopped! Every day counts!

Ruma Tekau maa Rima – Rm 15

Over the past few weeks, Room 15 has been busy engaging in fun learning activities and focusing on teamwork! We celebrated Samoan Language Week with the amazing Samoan band Punialava’a, who brought great vibes and joyful songs. Many of our tamariki proudly performed in the final assembly, showcasing Samoan culture with pride. Our inquiry focused on transport and the change we want to see in Maangere Bridge. We created amazing inquiry boards with questions and solutions. In writing, we started our Better Start Literacy journey, learning about prefixes and suffixes in fun, hands-on activities. We also explored sustainability at Ambury Farm and learnt about the importance of teamwork during our Year 6 trip to Wero Whitewater Park. What a term it’s been—bring on Term 3!

Ruma Tekau maa Ono – Rm 16

We’ve reached the end of Term 2 and the halfway mark of the year! In Math, we continued using Math No Problem, focusing on addition and subtraction. In Writing, we explored procedural texts by making tasty and delicious jelly donuts. Our assembly with Room 7 was a standout moment, with students performing exceptionally well. For Inquiry, we studied the history of transportation, environmentally safe transports and ended with an exciting boat-building project—racing our creations in the school pool! We also focused on kindness and teamwork, learning how to support one another both in and out of class. Finally, this term included two amazing trips: Wero Whitewater Park, where students showed great courage and teamwork on the water, and Ambury Farm, where we learned about sustainability and caring for our environment. What a fantastic term it’s been!
