Cook Island Language Week ‘Te Reo Maaori Kuuki ‘Airani’ 

This week Maangere Bridge School is proud to celebrate Cook Islands Language Week. We are excited to honour the rich culture, traditions and language of the Cook Islands with our students and community. The Theme for this year’s celebration is “Me kite koe i te tuatua i to’ou reo tupuna, e turanga rangatira tena nō’ou no te uki amuri atu” “With our language as our foundation we will embrace the future”.

We warmly invite our families and the wider community to join us for our Special Kia Orana Day Assembly on Thursday 6th August at 11 am held in the auditorium. We look forward to seeing you there. Meitaki ma’ata. 

Pou Tuuhono Inquiry Term 3 ‘I can Reflect’ Health and PE

This term our Pou Tuuhono Inquiry Concept is ‘I can reflect’ with a focus on the Achievement Objectives from our Health and PE Curriculum. The students have enjoyed taking part in Life Education for the first two weeks of Term 3 where each whaanau team have had the opportunity to learn about the following topics: Years 1 – 3 Piiwaiwaka ‘How food gives us energy’ Years 4 – 6 Kea ‘Being Nutrition Savvy’ , Rumaki Reo and Samoan Unit Tumau le Fa’avae ‘Nutrition’ and the Year 6 Puberty Session. Thank you to Carleen and the team from Life Education Trust as well as Harold the Giraffe who made lessons enjoyable and fun. 

Expression of Interest in the Samoan Unit ‘Tumau le Fa’avae’

We currently have a Year 1 – 3 classroom Room 8/Vasega Valu for our Juniors in the Samoan Unit ‘Tumau le Fa’avae’ led by Ms Lisi Seve who is the classroom teacher/faiaoga. 

We would like to inform all parents who are interested and have an expression of interest in their child starting in the Samoan Unit ‘Tumau le Fa’avae’ to contact the school office or email Bernicem@mangerebridge.school.nz . We will be opening up a second class in 2027 as part of the schools Implementation Plan which will be a Year 3 and 4 class.

We will continue to send out information however you can visit our school website about the Enroment criteria for the Samoan Unit.

OUR WHY?

Why do we celebrate Cook Island Language Week at Maangere Bridge School?

There are 6.6% (22 out of 329 students) who identify first ethnicity as Cook Island at MBS. 

There are 39.5% (130 out of 329 students) who identify themselves as Pacific Island at MBS.

We have staff members who are of Cook Island Heritage at MBS. 

To acknowledge and understand that Cook Island Maaori and New Zealand Maaori share deep ancestral, linguistic and political ties. 

The linguistic kingship ties identify Cook Island Maaori often called Rarotongan and New Zealand Maaori Te Reo Maaori belong to the same language family.  

To involve and encourage our Cook Island Parents, children and staff to take part in our learning programmes. 

To promote initiatives to maintain and grow the recognition, learning and use of the Cook Island language in the home, in education, work, government, media, sports, arts and the community. 

The Cook Island language and Te Reo Maaori vocabulary and grammar overlap significantly however they are mutually distinct languages with differing phonetics and dialects. 

The Cook Islands comprise of 15 distinct islands spread across the Pacific Ocean, each with rich storytelling, dance and music traditions.

Kia ora Maangere Bridge School Whaanau,

The safety of our tamariki as they travel to and from school is a top priority for us all.

Our staff member Whaea Jas is currently gathering whaanau feedback and safety observations regarding pedestrian road safety around Hastie Avenue and the lower end of Coronation Road, particularly during peak drop-off and pick-up times.

To help build a clear, evidence-based picture of the traffic hazards in this area – and to support an official submission to Auckland Transport (and likely to the Māngere-Ōtāhuhu Local Board) – we would love to hear from you.

We are gathering information on:

• Any near misses, hazardous incidents, or safety concerns you have experienced or witnessed.

• Specific areas along Hastie Avenue or Coronation Road where children and whaanau face difficulty crossing safely.
