The 2025 theme for Samoa Language Week is
‘Ia malu lou sā. Folau i lagimā
A well-grounded self, is a successful self’.
This year’s theme:
“A well-crafted ocean sailing vessel, built with care and precision, ensures a safe and steady journey. When all its parts are thoughtfully constructed, the vessel remains balanced, strong and ready to face the open seas.
Similarly, people who prepare thoroughly and with intention become grounded and resilient and well-equipped to navigate life’s challenges and succeed in their endeavours. No matter the challenges and hardships of life, a well-grounded person will not be easily shaken or defeated because they are firmly rooted and well-prepared”.

The Samoan Language is the third most spoken language in Aotearoa New Zealand.
To rasie awareness of the Samoan language as a language spoken by a significant amount of people in Aotearoa New Zealand
To involve and encourage our Samoan Parents, children and staff to take part in our learning programmes.
To promote initiatives to maintain and grow the recognition, learning and use of the Samoan language in the home, in education, work, government, media, sports, arts and the community.
(The ethnicity data collected above is gathered through Etap an SMS system when whaanau and families enrol their child at MBS)

Over the last 5 weeks our tamariki have been learning some new and amazing things through their student learning inquiry and the Science and Technology Curriculum. We have celebrated Road Safety Week and had visitors from Auckland Transport teach our students about keeping safe on the roads. Our students dressed up for Pink Shirt day which is all about creating a culture of manaakitanga, kindness and a bully-free environment. Other celebrations included NZ Sign Language week, Rotuman Language Week and supporting our PTA Disco and fundraiser which was a fun night for our kids. We are very proud of our Girls and Boys Rugby League zones who represented MBS and did us proud.
Our Teacher Only Day held on Friday 30th May focussed on the Refreshed NZ Mathematics Curriculum supporting our staff to develop and understand ‘The Science of Learning’, unpacking key messages about the statement ‘UKD’ Understand-Know-Do and progress outcomes for each phase and what students are expected to learn over their time in school. Thank you to Lawrence from the Ministry of Education who supported and delivered the mahi on this day.
It was great to also be part of the MPA Mangere Principal Association School Campaign on how to improve attendance and engagement for our tamariki. We had a stall at the ‘TwoSevenFive’ Community event and it was great to network and gather feedback from our parents and families.
We look forward to celebrating Gagana Samoa ‘Samoa Language Week’, International Language Week, Parent Partnership Meetings, sharing our students’ inquiry learning and getting ready for our annual ‘Matariki Night Market’ held on the 19th June (day before Matariki Public Holiday). Te Pane o Mataoho Whaanau
|
“I am building my own house, the pillars inside are maahoe and patatee, the roof is made of wood. It must be grown with the fruit of the lengarenga, and strengthened with the fruit of the kawariki.”
Te Pane o Mataoho will build its own house, and this is the time for joy. We have delved deeply into the noble practices of Maori medicine. We have carefully studied the plants and trees that our ancestors used to heal themselves. What are the benefits of these practices? So, let’s keep them going.
Te Pane o Mataoho has been strongly influenced by the healing process and the beauty of the environment. We are all excited to showcase our learnings under the auspices of Matariki, at the exhibition that will be held in the coming weeks.
Good morning to all of us.

Library Term 2
With classroom renovations underway, Whaea Rose has welcomed Room 1 to share our library space! It’s been a lot of fun spending extra time together.
Our library this term has been mobile with Whaea Rose visiting each class, swapping books and sharing lots of stories. We have had more lovely books added to our library as well as a wonderful selection from the National Library.
MBS Lego Kindness Boxes
Whaea Rose has also been busy sharing our new MBS ‘Lego Kindness Boxes’, thanks to the amazing Kindness Collective. We have seen moments of inspiration, resilience, kotahitanga, creativity, problem solving and so much JOY! Our tamariki are truly sharing our MBS values as they build kindness together Whaea Rose is incredibly proud and excited to see what you create next! Whaea Rose

Room 1 has been busy settling into Term 2 and making the most of our new space in the library. We love being surrounded by so many wonderful books and are enjoying exploring them every day! In the classroom, we’ve been focusing on counting and learning all about shapes. The students have been working hard and showing great progress in their understanding of numbers and geometry. This week, we had a fun and exciting PE session with KC from CLM. The class had a blast trying out new games and activities, we can’t wait to keep practising the skills we learned.

Room 2 is excited to be learning in Room 10 our temporary space, which was previously the SKiD space, while renovations are underway in our classroom. The tamariki are thoroughly enjoying their daily learning experiences and are making the most of this temporary change.

Comments on the Day from Whaea Winona
Our MBS girls attended the MOSA Rugby league Zones and amazed us all with their efforts, perseverance and humility. We took a team of 11 girls, 7 of who had never played before. With only 1 sub all day, they exceeded all our expectations and walked away with 3rd place!!! We are so proud of the girls and all their efforts. Thank you to the parents who came out to support our team, your presence aroha was definitely felt.

Comments on the Day from Koka Ellina!
Our MBS Boys did so well at the MOSA Rugby League Zones tournament. They placed 9th and showed such courage & determination. What was evident was the aroha & support our tamariki had from their whanau. They lifted every time they heard their family cheer on the sideline.

We’re now halfway through Term 2, and it’s been a fantastic start filled with creativity, curiosity and connection. Here’s a snapshot of what our amazing Kea Learners have been up to!
|
‘Learning Together’
Across all our classes, students embraced Pink Shirt Day. We proudly wore pink, created posters and took part in conversations about kindness and standing up for others. It was a meaningful way to reinforce the importance of empathy and being an upstander in our school. We’ve also launced into our Inquiry ‘Design for a Changing Future’ with classes exploring Science and Technology through the lens of innovation, transport, forces and problem-solving. Our aakonga are thinking like real scientists and it’s been incredible to watch their curiosity grow.
A huge highlight for many Year 4 – 6 classes was the visit from the NZ Warriors foundation. Students participated in the ‘Prepare to Perform Progamme’ which was fun and energetic traning sessions. We learnt valuable lessons about the importance of making healthy choices and teamwork, we even had the chance to meet the players Patrick Moimoi and. Ali Leiataua. Thank you to Charlotte and her team for making this possible for us and a special shout out to Oliver in Room 5 and his whaanau for reaching out to the NZ Warrior Comunity Foundation on behalf of our school.

Ruma Tekau maa Tahi – Rm 11
|
It was an awesome start to Term 2 for Room 11. It has been a fun filled and exciting learning journey in the past few weeks. Students in Room 11 are eager to learn and engage themselves in all areas of learning whether it be inside or outside the classroom. On a sad note Kea whanau farewelled Whaea Lyrentia this term and we are saddened by her departure.
For our Student Inquiry this term students will explore ‘The Scientists in Me’ and we are looking at transport systems. In reading and writing, we are using the Better Start Literacy Approach (BSLA) together with Room 15 this term. It is a new approach to Literacy which the students enjoy. We’ve also focused on building our numeracy skills, and it’s been wonderful to see the progress our tamariki have made. Students continue to work on ‘Maths No Problem’ and presently we are working on Addition and Subtraction.
Room 11 showed support for Pink Shirt Day where they came in different shades of pink to show their support against bullying. We also got a chance to meet the Warriors team members and get their autographs signed on a warriors team photograph. The students also had sessions and fun games on that day. Students from Room 11 have also been part of the school sports teams and continue to show their best in all team sports. We’re excited for what’s to come in the later part of the term.
|
|
Ruma Tekau maa Rua – Rm 12
|
Room 12 have been building models of transport and writing about its evolution. We’re embracing a growth mindset through the NED programme, enjoying PE and waiata, and celebrating the power of encouragement and perseverance.

|
|
Ruma Tekau maa Toru – Rm 13
|
We started the term with learning around ANZAC Day and took part in the school safety survey. As scientists, we explored nature-inspired transport using AI and art, and we’re proud of our maths achievements on Mangahigh. We also farewelled our amazing kaiako Whaea L and wished her all the best in her new adventures and warmly welcomed our awesome new kaiako Matua Peter to our MBS whaanau.
|
|
Ruma Tekau maa Wha – Rm 14
|
Room 14 has been diving into the science of forces and simple machines, laying the groundwork for our transport inquiry. We made anti-bullying posters for Pink Shirt Day and have been focusing on kindness, confidence, and classroom wellbeing.
|
|
Ruma Tekau maa Rima – Rm 15
|
In Room 15, our scientists have been tackling real-world problems with critical thinking and creative solutions. As tuakana to our teina class Room 5 we have had several opportunities to combine our creative minds using lego as part of our kura kindness collective. Our visit from the Warriors was a huge hit, full of energy and inspiration.
|
|
Ruma Tekau maa Ono – Rm 16
|
Room 16 explored the meaning behind ANZAC Day and held thoughtful discussions around being an upstander. Our inquiry into biomimicry and transport has sparked some fantastic thinking about how nature can inspire innovation and change.
