Tumuaki/Principal Message

Kia Orana!

We have had a good start to Term 3 with our students settling back into school routines and finding out more about our School Production and our Student Inquiry Learning through the Arts Curriculum (Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts). Our School Production is called ‘Ko Wai Ahau? Who am I? which is our school theme for 2025. It is great to have this opportunity for all students to take part in the Production.

The New Zealand School Board Conference was held in Christchurch and it was great to attend this year during the second week of the school holidays. The Hon. Minister of Education Erica Standford shared the 6 Priorities and two of these focuses on ‘Smarter Assessment and Reporting’ and ‘Better approach to literacy and Numeracy’. As a school we will continue to focus on Attendance and our target for 2025 is 90% for regular attendance. We are pleased that there has been a shift in attendance in comparison to last year. One of the highlights for me was listening to Kathryn Berkett whose presentation was about ‘The Neuro Science in how we learn’. She touched on what we see/hear/feel more often is what our brain will learn. What was interesting was understanding the upper/Green brain and the lower/red brain and how each works differently which is important to understand our students and how their brain works.

The refurbishment in the Piiwaiwaka Classrooms and also the toilets by Room 5 are coming along well. Whaea Connie and the Room 1 students are enjoying their new room with brand new carpert and yellow and grey autex on the walls.  The next group of classes will start to shift and their refurbishments will begin very soon. We are ensuring to support our staff and students impacted by the refurbishment and appreciate your patience.

We are excited about ‘Cook Island Language Week’ coming up in Week 4 and celebrating the traditions, culture and language from the Cook Islands. We are proud to have staff who are of Cook Island heritage in our school and a fluent speaking teacher from the Cook Islands ‘Whaea Aileen ‘in Room 6.

Finally, School Board Triennial Elections are coming up and our Returning Office and the school will continue to send out more information to support any aspiring board members who are keen to find out more about the roles and responsibilities on a school board.

We continue to remind our students to dress warm during winter and if your child is sick we do encourage them to stay at home. Please inform the school office if your child is away. We appreciate your ongoing support and feedback.

Ngaa mihi nui kia kotou, Fa’afetai tele lava

Cook Island Language Week

3 – 9 August 2025

The 2025 theme for Cook Islands Māori Language Week is ‘Ātui’tui’ia au ki te raurau a tōku matakeinanga – “Connect me to the offerings of my people’.

OUR WHY?

Why do we celebrate Cook Island Language Week at Maangere Bridge School?

There are 5% (19 out of 344 students) who identify first ethnicity as Cook Island at MBS.

There are 36.9% (127 out of 344 students) who identify themselves as Pacific Island at MBS

There are 4 staff members who are of Cook Island Heritage at MBS.

To strengthen the cultural identity of Cook Islanders living in New Zealand to foster a sense of belonging and pride in their heritage.

To encourage participation in school events, language learning activities, cultural performances and sharing the knowledge about Cook Island traditions.

To involve and encourage our Cook Island Parents, whaanau, children and staff to take part in our learning programmes and appreciate the diversity of cultures within our country.

To provide an opportunity to promote initiatives to maintain and grow the recognition, learning and use of the Cook Island language in the home, in education, work, government, media, sports, arts and the community.

The Cook Islands celebrates the 60th anniversary of self-governance. The 60th Constitution Day will be celebrated in Rarotonga.
